FROM THE ARTIST, The land once known as Kiowa land, or the Kiowa hunting grounds, heart of the Kiowa nation, was stolen by the white man and became what we know today as Iowa...Transformed forever, this Native American land holds many unkown traditions and treasures...... One such tradition is that of mask making. Mask making dates back to 900 B.C. with subjects as varied as bears, deer and buffalo..Master craftsmen would cut, sculpt and sew these animal heads to fit thier own... Leather masks originally were designed to keep body heat inside during cold, harsh winter months..Decorated with silver, gold and precious stones, many indians were killed and their masks stolen and then later stripped of thier decoration to be sold in the market place, for this reason, the tradition of making these masks little by little came to pass.... When I was born, my grandfather, "Lightning that Hears Tunder", gave me the name "Thunder that Cries"... He was born on the Kiowa Reservation in 1892. .He taught me the tradition of leather mask making and repeated the stories to me endlessly. Frequently he would say "Think before you speak, (I said it wrong) for I am not you and you are not me.. But I tell the story, not you, so hear my words, then learn the stories as they were told to me"******************** These masks are handcrafted in the finest materials in the Kiowan tradition...CHECK BACK FROM TIME TO TIME FOR NEW MASKS, KEEP IN MIND IT MAY TAKE SEVERAL MONTHS TO COMPLETE A NEW MASK.
